REGALIA EXPLAINED

THE GOWN:

Graduands from BachelorGraduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma awards wear a full-length plain black gown. The gown has full-length sleeves with a large slit in each sleeve. Your arms must go through the slits.

Graduands from Professional Doctorate and Masters awards wear a full-length plain black gown. These gowns have longer sleeves with long, narrow sleeve extensions.

Doctor of Philosophy graduands wear full-length black gowns with long sleeves. The front panels are faced with bands of scarlet silk.

All gowns are worn open and your clothing will be visible. Please wear something appropriate for a formal occasion.

THE HOOD:

Only graduates holding 'degrees' (i.e. BachelorMaster or Doctorate) wear a hood. Diploma and Certificate graduands do not wear hoods.

The hood colour differentiates different degree levels:

    •    Bachelor – a black hood partially lined with Pearl White silk

    •    Master – a black hood fully lined with Empire Blue silk

    •    Doctor – a black hood fully lined with either Union Jack Red silk (Doctor of Philosophy) or Ruby silk (Professional Doctorate)

THE STOLE:

Certificate - Stole of Pearl White, no hood

Associate Diploma - Stole of Empire Blue, no hood

Diploma - Stole of Empire Blue, no hood

Graduate Certificate - Academic dress appropriate for highest previous qualification, Stole of Ruby

Graduate Diploma - Academic dress appropriate for highest previous qualification, Stole of Gold

Associate Degree (Undergraduate) - Stole of Saffron, no hood

(If you have not completed a Bachelor Degree, you do not need a hood)

Associate Degree (Graduate) - Academic dress appropriate for highest previous qualification, Stole of Silver

Graduates form the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are invited to wear stoles representing their respective community flags.  Enquiries regarding these stoles can be made directly to the ATSIS Unit - atsis@uq.edu.au.

THE BONNET/TRENCHER:

Doctoral graduands (Professional Doctorate and Doctor of Philosophy) wear a black velvet bonnet with a red tassel.

All other graduands wear a black trencher (cap) with a black tassel that is worn hanging on the left side of the head. 

Trenchers are provided as a treasured keepsake "free of charge" to each graduand who hires or purchases regalia from Reed Graduation Services. The complementary trencher cap is given as a commemorative gesture and includes the University of Queensland logo on the inside of the cap.

MULTIPLE AWARDS:

Please note, those holding more than one degree are required to wear academic dress for the award being conferred. 

DRESS CODE:

All graduation gowns are worn open and your clothing will be visible. Please wear something appropriate for a formal occasion. Please note, t-shirts, shorts, runners and thongs are not appropriate.
